The Epistle of Paul The Book of Romans series: Learning to be rooted and established in The Cross of Christ

I am a debtor

Romans 1:14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

When Paul says; “I am a debtor” this speaks true of every believer.

The word "debtor" in the Greek is ὀφειλέτης opheilétēs, of-i-let'-ace and it means an owner, i.e. person indebted; figuratively, a delinquent; morally, a transgressor (against God):—debtor, which owed, sinner.

As we look at the Greek word search, we can see the meaning of what Paul is giving to the church at Rome, even so, we too are deters to the Cross of Christ.

Once we were a debtor to the sin nature but when we come into the saving knowledge of Christ and Him crucified we are a debtor to Christ as becoming Saints of God.

The preaching of the gospel which is the Cross, and as becoming believers we must go and spread the Word of Jesus and Him Crucified.

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 9:16 "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!"

The preaching of the Cross is vital even in the days that we live in today, we must remember that if we have given our lives to Jesus, we crucify our flesh, we put on the new man which is in Christ Jesus.

As Paul clearly brings out in this verse "both to the Greeks and to the Barbarians both to the wise and the unwise" it is God's desire for all to know who He is and that none should perish, what a blessing it is from God to have wisdom in The Cross of Christ!

The word "Barbarian" in the Greek is βάρβαρος bárbaros, bar'-bar-os and it basically means "a foreigner, a member of a community or tribe not belonging to one of the great civilizations either it be Greek, Roman, or Christian. "

As for the wise and unwise this is not necessarily implying brilliance or special schooling or training but rather the ability to apply with skill what one knows, here in the New Testament particularly it is used to apply Spiritual truth in one's life, this stands true to all people whoever they may be or whatever they may be.

If we truly reflect on this first on what Paul is saying to the church at Rome and apply it to our own lives, we can truly see the Holy Spirit telling us even today no matter who we are, if we are wise or unwise if we have an education, or not, we will see that true wisdom comes through, and only through the Cross of Christ.

We can all testify that once we were lost, without the without the Cross but now, we are found because of the Cross, John 3:16 explains God's love, for all humanity because of His love when He gave His only begotten Son to all who believes in Him, would never perish but have everlasting life!

Hallelujah for the Cross of Christ, what a privilege it is to enter into the throne room of God, into the Holy of Holies, where the Blood was applied on the mercy seat Of God!

The Cross of Christ was not a place of defeat but a place of victory, blessed are all those who walked by the way of the Cross!
